What’s In A Name
What should it sound like? Is it a cool name during this age and time? Is it easy to pronounce? What does it rhyme with? Will other kids be jerks towards mine if I choose this name?
Choosing a baby’s name is a very pivotal moment in your life as a parent; after all, it’s something your little ones will carry with them throughout the course of their life. Being meticulous in choosing is basically a must, because surely, we don’t want our kids being unjustly harassed for having such a funny name.
Can you just imagine the chaos that awaits if you have a son and a daughter and you interchanged the names – giving the boy’s name to your daughter, and the girl’s name to your son instead. In a society that takes a lot of pride in the norms we’ve been accustomed to, we certainly do not want our children to be the talk of the town.
While others may think that it’s just a harmless thing to make fun of, it doesn’t work that way especially if our child’s well-being is at stake.
Most expecting parents that we know prefer not to share the name they have for their child, as it might lead to labels and judgments. Perhaps, in a community where people didn’t judge nor tease about baby’s names, it would be easier for parents to announce their intended name for their kid with joy and utmost confidence.
While our names don’t actually define us, our actions do; and we think that’s something we should be more mindful about.
The reason why we delved on this topic is because name teasing is a common case that needs to be addressed accordingly. For most people, being teased and belittled with their names is an entryway to feeling worthless and powerless, which eventually leads to feeling terribly sucky.
Parents-to-be spend a meticulous amount of time in choosing the perfect name for their child so they won’t be ridiculed, but have you taken a moment to pause on how you will teach your child-to-be on the proper way to act should they encounter a fellow kid who may have been given an unusual, funny name?
We feel that this serves as a reminder to practice mindful parenting, and to keep your eyes and mind open in instilling essential takeaway lessons about kindness to your kids.
