Best Birth and Newborn Classes in the Phoenix Area

Most Phoenix-area families can choose between a hospital childbirth class, usually taught where you plan to deliver, and an independent class such as HypnoBirthing that focuses more on coping techniques and mindset. A newborn care class and an infant CPR class are worth adding either way.

We get asked about classes often, especially by parents who already have a doula and wonder whether they still need one. (Short answer: they do different jobs. We explain why in Do I need a birth class if I have a doula?) This list covers six verified options in Scottsdale and Phoenix, with what each one says it teaches.

Class schedules, formats and prices change often, so we don’t list dates or costs. Check each provider’s site for the current calendar, and aim to finish childbirth classes in your early third trimester.

How we chose

  • Each provider currently lists classes for Scottsdale or Phoenix-area families on its own website.
  • We looked for coverage across four needs: labor preparation, newborn care, feeding, and infant CPR.
  • We only included method-specific instructors (Lamaze, Bradley, HypnoBirthing) when we could confirm a current local class on the instructor’s own site.
  • Facts come from each provider’s site. No ratings, reviews or prices.

1. HonorHealth maternity classes

Scottsdale families delivering at HonorHealth

  • Understanding Childbirth, Understanding Breastfeeding, Understanding Your Newborn
  • Infant CPR and Child CPR
  • In-person and e-learning sessions
  • In person at Scottsdale Shea or Sonoran Crossing

HonorHealth suggests taking its childbirth class near the start of the third trimester; topics include labor, comfort techniques, medical procedures, cesarean birth and postpartum. The newborn class is open to family members, including expectant grandparents.

Its infant CPR class covers CPR and choking for babies from birth to 1 year and is taught by a certified American Heart Association instructor, but HonorHealth notes it does not include a course completion card.

2. Banner Health prenatal and new parent classes

Families delivering at a Banner hospital, and new dads

  • Childbirth education, parenting/newborn care and breastfeeding classes
  • New dads classes
  • Car seat safety classes
  • Banner notes offerings vary by location

Banner’s childbirth class covers the stages of labor, breathing techniques, medical options and positions for labor and cesarean birth. Its parenting class covers diapering, feeding, bathing, signs of illness and comforting a crying baby.

The new dads class stands out: Banner says it covers holding the baby, home safety, relationship changes and the emotional side of becoming a father. Check which classes your Banner hospital currently runs.

3. Dignity Health St. Joseph’s and Chandler Regional

Families delivering at a Dignity Health hospital in Phoenix or Chandler

  • Childbirth classes, safety education and birth center tours (St. Joseph’s)
  • Childbirth and “mommy fit” classes, plus tours (Chandler Regional)
  • Class listings are on each hospital’s Classes and events tab

If you’re delivering at St. Joseph’s in central Phoenix or Chandler Regional, the hospital’s own class is the easiest way to learn its routines, from check-in to rooming-in. Pair it with a tour so the building is familiar before labor starts. Both hospitals appear in our hospitals list.

4. Modern Milk

A full prep series in Scottsdale, including CPR

  • Pregnancy, Birth & Baby Class; The Newborn Class; The Breastfeeding Class
  • “Staying Calm & Confident in an Emergency: Infant & Child CPR”
  • In-person, online and private classes
  • 13802 N. Scottsdale Rd., Suite 163, Scottsdale

Modern Milk is a Scottsdale practice whose lactation consultants are IBCLCs. Its hands-on Newborn Class, for families in the second or third trimester, meets twice for 2.5 hours each. The breastfeeding class is offered in person and online, and partners are encouraged to come.

It sells bundles of these classes, which can simplify scheduling if you want to cover birth, newborn care, feeding and CPR in one place.

5. Happy Birthing AZ

HypnoBirthing combined with standard childbirth education

  • Hybrid course: evidence-based childbirth education plus HypnoBirthing techniques
  • Group and private HypnoBirthing series, a crash course and a partner prep group
  • “Latch and Learn” breastfeeding course
  • Serves Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Tempe, Glendale and Peoria

Happy Birthing AZ pairs the usual class content (stages of labor, epidurals, induction, cesarean birth, hospital procedures) with breathing, relaxation and visualization practice. It says the course suits unmedicated births and families who plan an epidural but want tools to stay calm first.

6. Scottsdale Fire Department CPR classes

Grandparents and caregivers who want CPR from the local fire department

  • Basic CPR/AED and First Aid Combination Class includes infant, child and adult CPR
  • Non-certifying; pre-registration required through Leisure Education
  • Held at Scottsdale Fire Headquarters, 8401 E. Indian School Rd.
  • Free hands-only CPR presentations for groups

The city lists this class for parents and babysitters, among others. Because infant CPR differs from adult CPR, the combined class is a practical choice for grandparents and nannies who will be caring for your baby.

We looked for local Bradley Method and Lamaze-certified instructors but could not confirm a current Scottsdale or Phoenix class on an instructor’s own website, so none are listed. The Bradley Method runs a “Find a Bradley Professional” directory if you want to search yourself.

Questions to ask before you choose

Hospital class or independent class?

A hospital class teaches you how that hospital runs, which is useful. An independent class usually spends more time on comfort techniques and decision-making. Many families take one of each.

When should I take a childbirth class?

Most providers, including HonorHealth, suggest early in the third trimester, close enough to remember it and early enough to finish if your baby comes before your due date.

Do I still need a class if I have a doula?

A class gives you and your partner the knowledge; a doula gives you support in the moment. Read our full answer.

Should my partner come?

Yes, if they can. Most of the classes above encourage partners or support people to attend, and several are designed for two. A partner who has practiced comfort measures, and knows the hospital routine is usually more confident at 2 a.m. Grandparents who will help often benefit from the newborn and CPR classes too.

Is an online class enough for infant CPR?

Online content can help you learn the steps, but CPR is a physical skill. Several classes above are hands-on, which lets an instructor check your technique.

What Families Say

★★★★★
With Luke being our first baby and family living so far away, we knew we were going to need help. I called Doulas of the Valley and spoke to Debbie at the beginning of my 3rd trimester. I loved her from the start.
