Doulas of the Valley publishes this list, and we have ranked ourselves first. We are a doula practice, so read that as our opinion; the other practices are here because Scottsdale families ask us about them, and you should check each one yourself.

The best birth doula for you in Scottsdale or Paradise Valley is the one whose approach fits your birth plan, who can reach your hospital or birth center, and who you would be glad to see walk into the room at 3am. Below are seven practices that serve this part of the Valley, starting with ours, with what each one says about itself on its own website.

A birth doula (sometimes called a labor doula) is a trained, non-medical support person. She helps you prepare during pregnancy, stays with you through labor, and helps you settle in with your baby in the first hours afterward. She does not replace your OB, midwife or nurses. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG Committee Opinion No. 766) notes that continuous one-to-one emotional support, such as from a doula, is associated with improved outcomes for women in labor.

We are a Scottsdale doula practice founded by Debbie Aglietti Forbes, and over nearly 20 years our mother-daughter team has supported more than 1,000 families. The people who help you prepare for labor are the same team who can support you at home afterward with postpartum doula care, so you are not starting over with strangers in the first week. Its home page names Scottsdale and Paradise Valley directly in its service area, along with most of the Valley, and it also runs childbirth education classes if you want a class and a doula from the same place.

Sunshine Doula Services is built around birth. Its about page introduces Kelly Sunshine, who has been a birth doula for over 13 years, and a small group of doulas who work alongside her.

Its services page describes support in your home during early labor if needed, help deciding when to head to the hospital or birth center, and staying through delivery and the first settling-in period. It also says plainly that a doula does not replace your partner, which is a good sign if your partner wants a real role on the day.

4. Cherry Blossom Doula Services

Its owner also lists bereavement and special-circumstance birth support, which is worth knowing about if your pregnancy has not been straightforward.

6. Whole Mama Wellness Collective

Questions to ask before you choose

Interview two or three doulas if you can. Our list of questions to ask a doula as a first-time mom goes deeper, but these are the ones that matter most for birth.

Will you be the doula at my birth, or could it be someone else?

Teams and collectives often use a primary doula plus a backup. Ask whether you will meet the backup before your due date, and how the handover works if your primary doula is at another birth.

When do you join me in labor?

Some doulas come to your home in early labor, others meet you at the hospital. Ask how they decide, and how you reach them once contractions start. If you want to be at home as long as you comfortably can, say so.

Have you supported births at my hospital?

Scottsdale and Paradise Valley families deliver at several hospitals and birth centers. A doula who knows your unit’s layout and routines can help you settle faster. Ask your hospital directly about its current support-person policy.

What happens after the baby is born?

Ask how long your doula stays after delivery and whether there is a postpartum visit. If you think you will want more help at home, ask whether the same practice offers postpartum care.

What is included, and what is extra?

Prenatal visits, phone and text support, classes and placenta services are packaged differently by every practice. Ask for the details in writing so you can compare fairly.
