Paradise Valley families have more postpartum doula services to choose from than it first appears, because most providers that cover Scottsdale and central Phoenix also list the town. The seven below each name Paradise Valley on their own websites and offer postpartum support in the home, including overnight care.

The questions here tend to be different from a first apartment in town. Homes are larger, there may already be a house manager, nanny or chef on staff, and some families want a confidentiality agreement before anyone walks through the door. So this list focuses on how each service handles overnights, longer schedules, privacy and fitting into an existing household.

One thing that does not change with the size of the house: the person who gave birth still needs rest and follow-up care. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends contact with an obstetric care provider within the first three weeks after birth, so build doula support around those appointments, not instead of them.

It also offers a stay at Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale with doula support, for families who would rather recover away from a busy house.

3. Well Supported Family

Well Supported Family is an agency working in several states, with an Arizona team focused on in-home newborn care. Its site distinguishes between newborn care specialists, who more often cover consecutive nights, and postpartum doulas, who more often work day shifts or a package of hours.

For households that want more than a few nights a week, it says its travel team can cover 24/7 live-in care or schedules over 60 hours. It works on a contract and retainer once you are matched.

4. Newborn Beginnings

Newborn Beginnings is Maryann’s practice. Her site says she offers postpartum doula services, newborn care specialist services, consultations and product recommendations to help parents understand their babies and ease into the postpartum period.

Her site also lists areas in Massachusetts, California and New Hampshire, so ask early which dates she expects to be working in Arizona.

5. The NCS Agency (Newborn Care Solutions)

Matching a doula or night specialist to a particular household

The NCS Agency vets and matches professionals rather than sending one doula. Its site says it tries to match experience to your situation, giving the example that a doula who suits a first-time parent may not be right for someone recovering from a traumatic birth.

Its site recommends connecting in the second trimester. It suits a household that already has staff and wants help defining exactly which role to add.

If your baby spends time in the Level III NICU at HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea, which is on Shea Boulevard in neighboring Scottsdale, this is a specialty worth asking about.

Questions Paradise Valley families ask

Will a doula work alongside our nanny or house manager?

Most will, but agree on roles in writing before the baby arrives: who handles night feeds, who does baby laundry, who talks to the pediatrician’s office. A doula is there for the recovering parent as well as the baby, which is different from a nanny’s job. Our piece on night doulas and night nannies covers the overlap.

Can we ask for a confidentiality agreement?

Yes, and it is a reasonable request. Haven says so on its site; with anyone else, ask at the first call rather than on day one of care.

Do we need 24-hour care?
